A KinetiX floor-mounted railcar diagnostic system is being tested in Astana

At Astana station, the “KTZ NC” JSC will conduct a pilot run of a floor-mounted intelligent control system for monitoring the condition of rolling stock, developed using the KinetiX technology of the American company Wabtec. The system was scheduled to be put into operation in the first quarter of 2026.

The scanning of wagons in motion is carried out using 3D cameras, infrared, acoustic, and vibration sensors, as well as artificial intelligence technology. The system’s subsystems monitor the condition of bogies, braking equipment, wheel sets, axle bearings, and automatic couplers. Information on any defects detected automatically is immediately relayed to specialists, enabling them to make prompt decisions on whether a wagon needs to be uncoupled or can continue its journey. The high level of diagnostic accuracy allows for the timely forecasting of wagon maintenance schedules and scope.

The use of the system speeds up the process of checking the condition of rolling stock, thereby contributing to the seamless operation of the railways and ensuring the safety of train traffic.

In the future, there are plans to install similar systems in six more regions of the country and integrate them with other digital platforms used on the “KTZ NC” JSC’s network.

KinetiX technologies are currently in use on many railways around the world. In February 2025, SNCF Voyageurs, the passenger division of the National Society of French Railways (SNCF), signed an agreement with Wabtec for the supply of KinetiX technologies for the automatic inspection of passenger trains.
