48 train stops and stations to be renovated in Latvia (according to information of the “Zheleznye dorogi mira” Journal)
As a result of a tendering process to do the design, upgrade, or construction of 48 train stops and stations, Latvian Railways (Latvijas dzelzceļš, LDz) has awarded contracts to two contactors, the Latvian company GMGS-FIMA and the Estonian subsidiary of the German LEONHARD WEISS. The former will take on the design, upgrade, and new construction at railway stations and stops on five railway lines: Riga – Jelgava, Riga – Tukums-2, Riga – Krustpils, Zemitāni – Skulte, and Kalngale – Skulte, while the latter will be responsible for the same work on the Zemitāni – Vecāķi segment of the Zemitāni – Skulte line.
LDz is implementing this project under the European Union’s program aimed to develop and upgrade the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). An estimated 44.4 million euros will be spent on the project, 85% of which will come as co-financing from the EU’s Cohesion Find, with the remaining 15% to be covered by LDz out of the company’s own financial resources.
The project aims to build raised platforms, modern functional over-the-platform canopies, benches, and bicycle parking facilities. Low-mobility passengers and passengers with impaired hearing or vision will be provided obstacle-free access to railway infrastructure aided by tactile paths and railings. The stations will also be furnished with public address and video surveillance systems.
For the first time in Latvia’s history, LDz developed a comprehensive visual style guide on passenger infrastructure in 2020. The guide will be used to create a common visual style of newly built or upgraded stations and other railway infrastructure facilities in Latvia.
