The length of the ferry is 136.5 m, and the width is 24 m.

IT is furnished with four tracks of 125 m each totaling 500 m in length, providing a capacity of 50 wagons with 3875 tonnes of goods and 350 passengers.

The 136-m long ferry was designed and manufactured in Turkey at Tatvan Shipyard in the city of Van. Its generators were produced by Tulomsas, a TCDD subsidiary. The manufacturing of the second ferry is still in progress at the same shipyard.

The Sultan Alparslan Ferry, being the largest in Turkey, is expected to improve railway transit transport along OSJD corridor No. 6 on the route Decin - Prague (Czech Republic) - Bratislava (Slovakia) - Budapest (Hungary) - Sofia (Bulgaria) - Ankara (Turkey) - Teheran (Iran) - Saparmurat Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan) and increase the trade volume. By removing this bottleneck in Van Lake transit, it is believed that there will be an opportunity for faster and seamless transport between Turkey and Iran as well as in the “One Belt - One Road” initiative aimed at providing better and sustained land transport linkages between East and West and connecting the countries in South and Central Asia and Caucasus to Europe via Turkey.

With a new railway line being built to the Port of Chabahar in Iran this route will also ensure the shortest land linkage between Europe and the Indian Ocean.
