From 18th till 21st September 2018, the International Trade Fair “Inno- Trans-2018” took place in Berlin, which being the largest trade fair in the world from the point of view of transport technologies and covering all the aspects of

railway industry, hosted3062 exhibitors from 61 countries across the world who have presented for the 12th time in the history their products, achievements and services to the visitors and experts whose number was a record this year reaching about 160 thousand from 110 countries of the world. The trade fair was also attended by the authoritative delegation from the OSJD Committee, being composed of Mr. Tadeusz Szozda, Chairman, Mr. Michail Vsevolozhskiy, Deputy Chairman, Mr. Radovan Vopalecky, Chairman of OSJD Commission on Infrastructure and Rolling Stock and other staff members.

The trade fair presented a great number of showpieces practically from all the fields of railway transport industry, over 400 innovation developments, 155 newest units of railway rolling stock on rail tracks and in the open area. This year, not only the quantitative and qualitative parameters of the trade fair were a record but its commercial characteristics as well.

The trade fair and the marginal events were organised in 41 exhibition pavilions and open areas equipped with rail tracks being 3500 meters long and an area designed to demonstrate the bus technologies and equipment.

This time different companies have presented their products and services, ranging from the manufacturers and designers of high-technology products to OSJD member railways and OSJD observers as well as OSJD affiliated enterprises from Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Hungary, Vietnam, Germany, Kazakhstan, China, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Romania, Slovak Republic, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Estonia and other countries.

The trade fair included as usual a comprehensive business programme. In addition to the opening ceremony, the first day also saw the “Rail Leaders’ Summit” which is the biggest event of the international rail community, being also held biannually. In the course of the two events, the heads of the rail transport industries of the European Union, Germany, Russia and other countries shared their visions of the future of railways under conditions of the dynamically developing world.

The trade fair included five key segments: “Railway technologies”, “Railway infrastructure”, “Public transport”, “Interior Appearance” and “Construction of tunnels”.

Most careful attention was drawn to digital technologies in all the fields of railway transport, matters of logistics and organisation of transportation.

Traditionally, many companies coordinate the signing of large contracts and important agreements, including the international ones, with the time the “InnoTrans-2018” Trade Fair is organised. Multitude agreements have been signed this time as well, whereby many of them were connected with the companies from the OSJD member countries.

Thus, “Transmashholding” JSC, the biggest Russian manufacturer of rolling stock, has concluded with the railways of Kazakhstan (“NC KTZ” JSC) an agreement to purchase the “Tulpar-Talgo” wagon-assembling undertaking located in the territory of Kazakhstan. One more agreement stipulates the construction of 1200

wagons at the said undertaking in 2018-2026 for the “Passenger Transportation” JSC, a daughter enterprise of the “NC KTZ” JSC. In accordance with agreements made, the modern wagons designed by the “Transmashholding” JSC will be assembled in the territory of Kazakhstan, including compartment cars, passenger cars, command cars as well as dining cars.

The representatives from “Siemens Mobility” and “LocoTech-Signal” companies have also signed a framework agreement on strategic and scientific-technical cooperation in the field of adaptation and introduction of the systems of railway automatics and teleautomatics in the 1520 mm track gauge area. To this end, it is planned on a long-term and mutually beneficial basis to organise a center of competencies within the framework of the “LocoTech-Signal” company in Moscow. It is projected that the center will be engaged in development and adaptation of the systems of safety and management of train traffic (including the mode of automatic control). It is supposed that within the framework of the agreement concluded, the “LocoTech-Signal” company will be provided with technical components and platforms, including the required software programmes and technologies.

The “PESA Bydgoszcz” JSC, an OSJD affiliated enterprise from Poland, has presented the progress of implementation of an agreement to deliver modern multiple-unit rolling stock for the “German Railways” JSC. In the course ofthe meeting of the Chairman of Board of the DB JSC, Richard Lutz, with the top management of the Company, agreements were reached on further cooperation in the field of delivery of electric trains.

For the purpose of renovation of the fleet of electric locomotives, which is one of the top-priority objectives of the “Ukrainian Railway” PJSC, Mr. Eugeniy Kravtsov, acting Chairman of Board of “Ukrainian Railway” PJSC and Mr. Henri Poupart-Lafarge, General Director of the “Alstom” company, have signed the Memorandum of Understanding, therefore, they have formalized their cooperation with a view to delivering and maintaining electric locomotives to Ukraine.

Digitalization as the main aspect of development of today’s railways

In the course of the events within the framework of the trade fair, the heads and managers of different level confirmed that the main drivers of development of rail sector included at the moment, in the near future and in the long-term perspective the digital technologies, innovation solutions (for instance, battery-driven and hydrogen transmission systems), cyber security, automation of train traffic control, including automatic control without driver as well as conversion to alternative modes of traction with a view to reducing the pollutant emissions and increasing the energy efficiency of railway transport. The showpieces presented at the “InnoTrans-2018” Trade Fair fully confirmed the tendencies mentioned above.

It was at the trade fair opening ceremony, in the presence of more than one thousand representatives from the rail sector, Ms. Violeta Bulc, European Commissioner, once gain spoke about the necessity of comprehensive develop­ment of digital technologies, including the expedited deployment of the European Train Control System (ETCS). For the past two years, a large variety of European railways have adopted or are about to adopt the plans for a large-scale deployment of the ETCS system in conjunction with the digital interlocking systems, which are considered as the background to transfer to a digital railway. To reduce costs and increase competitiveness on the market, Europe takes every effort to standardize the protocols and interfaces of the systems that provide safety and traffic control of trains.

The research results presented at the trade fair, which was conducted by the “McKinsey” consulting company at the order of the German Railways and Ministry for transport and digital infrastructure of Germany (BMVI), confirmed the economic feasibility of investments of many billions with a view to deploying the European Train Control System (ETCS) on the railways of Germany and stan­dardized digital systems of interlocking. Deployment of the ETCS system would make it possible to transfer the railways of Germany to a single digital platform, increase reliability and traffic capacity of railways as well as reduce their operation and maintenance costs.

The high technology products providing much more safety will include in particular as follows: the “Guide-Me” audio-visual assistant to passengers and people with reduced mobility for railway journeys from Austria; five world products unveiled in the field of monitoring, interlocking and signaling and communications by the “Yapi Merkezi” Turkish manufacturing company; cyber security systems to protect against attempts to attack software products in the field of railway transport of the “Revenga Smart Solutions” Spanish company; 3D obstacle recognition system for such dangerous sections as railway crossings, tunnels and bridges in Slovenia; “smart” safety control system for railway stations from the Republic of Korea and Germany; sensor devices of the “Continental AG” company, which are adapted to prevent accidents on the urban railway transport.

The year has seen much attention drawn at the trade fair to a multitude of application software products relating to transport. Unveiled word products being offered range from the systems that inform passenger on a real-time basis (CN-Con- sult/Germany) and software programmes for mobile sales of tickets “tixiPass” (France) up to smartphone systems to inform passengers “Visi- Web neo” of the “Ruf Telematik AG”, a company from Switzerland. The “OLTIS Group” Company (OSJD affiliated enterprise) presented the newest software products in the field of freight and passenger transportation, forwarding of goods, logistics, intermodal transport and management of infrastructure.

Much interest was aroused by the “Digital Railway” project presented at the trade fair by the RZD JSC. This project will become a new stage of development of the Russian railways, the implementation of which will provide a qualitatively new level of services rendered and change the traditional model of conduct of business. This is essential for the implementation of measures and the achievement of objectives of the long-term Development Programme of the RZD JSC until the year 2025. Within the framework of digital transformation, the systems of Internet items of property, handling of huge amounts of data, distributed register, digital simulation and artificial intellect will be fit into the technological processes of the Holding. On the basis of implementation of the import-independent solutions, a centralized system will be shaped to provide information security.

The exhibition booth of the RZD JSC demonstrated examples of possibilities to execute orders of carriage in paper-based form and remotely. Owing to information on the position finding of wagons and on the availability of cargo base, there appears a possibility to more effectively use rolling stock and railway infrastructure, minimizing the light running or empty mileage. The through service rendered includes a multimodal service, warehousing services, and this set of services will be extended in future. A “cloud service” was put into operation, allowing the rolling stock operators to allocate wagons for the electronic platform without upgrading the computer hardware and software.

The analogous approach to digitalization is applied to passenger traffic. Taking into account the fact that there i s a huge amount of information available on freight and passenger traffic to the railways, using the Big Data technologies has a high potential in favour of the clients.

Digitalization implies not only IT-ser- vices but also a significant change of traditional railway processes. This means the development of test technologies on the basis of dynamic systems to control transport operations, using the artificial intellect and new systems for interval management of train traffic.

Rolling stock as the basis for the progressive development of railways

The analysis of the locomotive engineering specimens presented at the trade fair has shown the main tendencies of today which are as follows:

  • Creation of reference platforms with a high extent of harmonization, on the basis of which the customers will have an opportunity to shape requirements for specific conditions of operation;
  • Reduction of life-cycle costs, including the cost reduction of electric power and diesel fuel as well as use of alternative fuels and introduction of “green technologies”;
  • Development of the “smart locomotive” concept.

The case of adaptation of the locomotive design to the operational requirements of the customer includes the “Prima H4” locomotive of the “Alstom” company, ordered by the Swiss Federal Railway (SBB). The hood-type locomotive is equipped with two Diesel-electric engines having an automatic control system, the use of which makes it possible to reduce the consumption of fuel by 20 % as compared with that of a conventional Diesel-electric locomotive. It is equipped with facilities of the European train control system (ETCS). Special attention during the creation of the locomotive was given to the cabin layout, which accommodates up to four crew members. In addition to the driver, the cabin can accommodate members of the infrastructure maintenance crew.

On the basis of the “Vectron” constructive platform, the “Siemens” Company has already manufactured over 700 locomotives for 37 customers from 18 countries. The “Smartron” Diesel-electric locomotive, being budget-priced, has been shown at trade fair for the first time, which is designed for the German market: the four-axle freight locomotive of 1435 mm track gauge was created on the basis of the “Vectron” platform and designed to provide high reliability and cost effectiveness along with the democratic price.

The CRPC Chinese manufacturer of rolling stock has made debut in the open area of the Inno- Trans 2018 trade fair with a hybrid-type shunting locomotive having an AC traction driving unit, dedicated for the railways of Germany (DB). This has been the first contract in the history of the CRRC to deliver traction rolling stock for the railway of Germany. The locomotive is equipped with a diesel driven generating set and a lithium-titanate accumulator storage battery and designed to carry out shunting operations on the passenger engine house tracks and move trains without passengers to the area of repairs. The smart control system of the locomotive supports the optimal mode of operation with a view to reducing the fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. When the train stops the diesel electric engine will shut down, and all the equipment will be fed from the accumulator storage battery. Such a mode of operation is also applied when the train moves in the urban areas, where the level of emissions is limited, as well as that in tunnels. The use of lithium-titanate accumulator storage batteries makes it possible to accumulate up to 80% of energy produced with regeneration braking. Their life cycle is ten times more than that of nickel cadmium storage batteries.

The RPC UWC PJSC (OSJD affiliated enterprise) has presented a six-axle flat wagon to carry large-tonnage containers in the territory of the countries with 1435 mm track gauge. The flat wagon of Sggrs model, being 80 feet long, has a carrying capacity of 107.5 tons, which allows it to carry different ISO containers of standard size, tank-containers and intermodal swap bodies with a gross weight of up to 36 tons. The flat wagon is equipped with a bogie of 22.5 thousand ton axle-load and capable of gaining the speed of movement of up to 120 km per hour.

In the railway sections and open areas, the “SA Lohr Industrie” company from France has shown an autonomous electric shuttle. Two world unveiling pieces have been brought to the exhibition area by the production consortium Siemens/Stadler (new elevated railway for Berlin) and the “Vossloh Locomotives” Company (DE 18 locomotive). According to the manufacturer, the locomotive is capable, thanks to different resets of “EcoPlus” type, of reducing the emissions of exhaust gases by half with a less power applied.

Profound interest of the guests and participants of the trade fair was aroused with the contentiousness among the unique developments relating to digitalization of railway engineering and systems. In the field of creation of “smart locomotive”, the Russian engineer school has been represented by the Clover Group Company (being part of the Group of the “2050.DIGITAL” companies). Its “SmartMaintenance” solution and unique physics-mathematical models of equipment failures provide the basis of the “Smart locomotive” intellectual system. The world leaders have recently been working in this direction aggressively. Thus, for instance, in Great Britain, each Hitachi “smart train” is equipped with 300-500 pieces of sensors, which creates an analytical platform for further optimization of technical maintenance of their train sets. But China develops its “smart train” that will have a digital control system of the movement speed and a system that will regulate the comfort conditions inside the train set and detect different conditions of equipment facing a risk of failure.

The “Smart locomotive” project has been implemented on the platform of an intellectual predictive analysis of data named as “Clover Predictive” being an in-house development of the company. Its main advantages include the search for conditions of the equipment facing a risk of failure, forecast of failures of locomo­tive equipment and record of abnormalities in automatic mode prior to entry of the locomotive into the engine house. Thus, the abnormality research model can analyze 260 parameters of Diesel-electric locomotives of the 2TE116U and 3TE116U series, 270 parameters of Diesel-electric locomotives of the 2TE25KM series and over 300 parameters of Diesel-electric locomotives of the TEP70U and TEP70BS series. Moreover, the locomotive diagnostics time has been reduced from two hours to five minutes, and over-cycle work can be configured prior to entry of the locomotive into the engine house. At the present time the test operation of the system is in progress. Over 20000 operational malfunctions of the locomotive equipment have been identified. The repairs making order will be compiled on the basis of information on the malfunctions detected.

Autonomous pilotless transport

In the course of one of the public discussions conducted at the trade fair, it was noted that the transition to digital technologies and introduction of automated equipment would not lead to job cuts but would make it possible to solve the problem of the ageing of staff members and the lack of skilled workers and specialists.

This year’s trade fair has demonstrated technologies which clearly identify the development tendency of the systems assisting the drivers on the basis of computer vision and the pilotless transport. Whereby, the activities in this direction are carried out by such world giants as “Siemens”, “Thales” and young companies as well.

For example, the “Siemens” company has, in the field of autonomous transport, made a presentation of a pilotless tram which was placed in operation in May 2018 in Potsdam (a suburb of Berlin). At the present moment a driver is available in the tram, since not all the issues have been tackled in part of the normative documents. The equipment of the tram to detect obstacles matches by 80% the equipment used for the shunting locomotives at the Luzhskaya station of the Russian railways.

Developments in the field of autonomous transport have also been demonstrated by the “Thales” company. In the end of 2017, the “Thales” company created the “CortAIx” research laboratory, a center of researches and technologies of artificial intellect. At the present time the engineers of the “Thales” company work to prove the concept of the autonomous operation of trains.

A report on the fully autonomous line of Beijing - Yangfang put into operation late in December 2017 has been represented by the company “Traffic Control Technology Co.”. The length of the line amounts to 27 km and includes nine flag stations. For operation runs of the electric trains in that section, the Chinese company developed 23 scenarios of normal operation and 18 scenarios of operation in different abnormal situations. The South Korean operator, “NEO TRANS” Company, has represented a DX line at the “InnoTrans-2018” Fair, which operates in pilotless mode. In the section being 31 km long, six trains are capable of operating in autonomous mode.

The main operator of the French railways (SNCF) also believes that the autonomous trains will change the rules of the game in the rail transport industry. The SNCF Company has launched a project to create prototypes of passenger and freight pilotless trains, with an intention to place them into operation in 2022.

Unusual interest was aroused at the Fair by a principally new type of transport, stringed transport (SkyWay), the basis of which is also composed with pilotless vehicles. The vehicle shown at the “InnoTrans-2018” Fair is an 18-seat unicar designed for urban passenger traffic at a speed of 150 km/h, which is something that is principally new in the world of rail transport. It is capable of accelerating up to 500 km per hour, whereby it consumes only 0.93 kg of fuel per a passenger within 100 km of the railway, which is negligible in an unprecedented way. At a speed of 100 km/h the consumption parameter will happen to be only 0.105 kilogram. This is achieved thanks to a high coefficient of efficiency of the system “steel wheel - steel rail” and thanks to the fact that the vehicle moves on the overpass. Because of this fact and in virtue of the unique form of the car, the designers and engineers managed to achieve a parameter being close to the theoretical limit. Control of the high-speed “SkyWay” is fully automatic, thanks to which it is possible to provide a minimum safe interval of traffic of 2 seconds. The efficiency with such parameters can exceed 200 thousand passengers per diem. The cost of travel may, thanks to the high efficiency, be in times lower than that of the modern high speed traffic, let alone airplanes.

The stringed railway looks sometimes like an overpass, sometimes it is like a monorail and sometimes it looks like a cable-railway. The stringed rail is still a rail which is an even metallic surface, on which the steel wheel of the rail vehicle “SkyWay” runs with the maximum coefficient of efficiency, being prepared to carry passengers and goods from door to door to any destination and at any time but with rather lower consumption of energy and environmental damage and a completely new technique. In addition to the fact that the stringed transport will change the perception of capacities of railways, it may become a possible basis of the global infrastructure transformation, where preservation of the environment will be provided, and towns may become totally pedestrian and all-time convenient without traffic jams, smog and other negative characteristic features of today. Change of the speed and technique of transportation may change though not all but a great deal. “SkyWay” railways have been already constructed in the test sections in Belarus, and the United Arab Emirates and other countries have shown their interest in the construction of such railways as well.

Therefore, the tendencies represented at the trade fair this year have obviously proved that pilotless technologies have a significant potential for development of future railway transport, and even operating pilotless trains will be in operation in the near future.

Rail Leaders’ Summit within the framework of the “InnoTrans-2018” Fair

The digital transformation of railways has also become one of the main topics at the Rail Leaders’ Summit which has turned to be a perfect platform to discuss global events and tendencies of development of the railway sector. In the course of the event, there was an exchange of opinions between the experts across the world with regard to the issues on the European and global transport policy and strategic developments in the railway sector as well. The event was attended by the ministers for transport from different countries, heads of railway and infrastructure companies as well as representatives from international transport organisations and associations.

The “RAILtropolis: it is the railway that is the future of cities and towns!” has become the keynote idea of the railway summit this year. Cities and towns are faced with a multitude of problems in the whole world and, according to the experts in the field of transport, the intellectual integration of railways into urban and regional transport systems as well as trans-regional transport will provide a key solution to the future mobility. “Smart” and accessible cities and towns are in need of effective railway systems providing sustainable links in the urban areas and between these areas. That is why, in the course of the summit, these vitally important issues were under consideration.

“InnoTrans-2018” Fair is a leading event in the sector of railway transport

Christian Goke, General Director of the “Messe Berlin ”, pointed out that this year’s edition of “InnoTrans” has conclusively once again shown that this is an ideal platform for demonstration of promising innovation solutions in combination with a tremendous international scale and a comprehensive understanding of all the stages of the complex chain of the creation of products and services.

From year to year the “InnoTrans” Trade Fair becomes more and more an attractive venue for the representatives from the railway industry across the world, where they have a nice opportunity to exchange their experience and knowledge of all the aspects of the railway industry in order to further increase effectiveness, reliability, security and safety, protection of environment, accessibility and competitiveness of railway transport..
